Abstract

This research project considers the development of an optimization model for unit commitment problem of hydrothermal systems (HTUC). This problem will be defined as a large scale nonlinear mixed integer model, solved using the advantages of semidefinite programming applied to combinatorial problems. The model should find a schedule of optimal operation of hydroelectric and thermoelectric power plants for a opertion time of one day or one week, with discretization hourly or half hourly. The objective function is to minimize the operation cost of power plants, considering both start-up cost of thermoelectric and hydroelectric plants of the machines and the cost of hydroelectric generation losses. The use of binary variables for schedule the units and nonlinear restrictions of the transmission system model, make this a highly complex problem. The elements of the objective function and constraints of the hydrothermal system has not been considered well developed in the literature as a unified model, since it always has been simplified modeling of less prevalent generation.
