Abstract

The search for new materials has been a major objective during all the human history. However, some materials, specially rubbers, will probably not have a substitute at long term, due to their unique mechanical properties. Nitrile rubber, NBR, allies the typical mechanical properties of rubbers with organic solvent resistance and it can be incorporated to the PVC in order to obtain a termoplastic elastomer. This project proposes to study the rheological, mechanical and vulcanization properties of NBR nanocomposites, with two kinds of clay as the filler: an import montmorilonite and a Brazilian bentonite, both treated with organic salts. The expected results are the improvement of the mechanical properties and processability of the rubber. The information generated by this work will also be used in a future doctorate project, which will be focused on the blend of NBR with PVC filled with clay. Other contribution of this work is to prove the feasibility of substituting an import clay for a national one. (AU)
