Abstract

Although the Callicebus primates in general are described as territorial, only three of the 28 species of this genus were subjected to studies that investigated this aspect of behavior. Still, in some of these works, the territorial behavior didn't show up in a clear way. This is possibly due to short observation periods, which didn't contemplate the effects of seasonal variation of food resources on territorial behavior. It is known that the defense of territories can be flexible, being manifest only when there is shortage of critical resources (which limit the population growth) and when these are economically defensible. At Serra do Japi it was observed that Callicebus nigrifrons seem to behave in a territorial way only in seasons with high fruit availability. In this context, we propose to investigate the territorial behavior of C. nigrifrons, analyzing the influence of changes on fruit's distribution and availability. Still, we intend to analyze the function of the duets, a kind of vocalization which are usually considered an important mechanism in the defense of territory but may also be related with partners' defense.
