Abstract

Dog and cat bites cause many internments and deaths in the whole world every year, both in developed and underdeveloped countries. Besides the injuries, bites and scratches can transmit many diseases, like bacterial infections and even though viral infections, which rabies is the main one of these, with high lethality rates. In 2002, there had been registered more than 400,000 dogs and cats aggressions towards people in Brazil. In previous studies in the city of Araçatuba, SP, was verified great percentage of aggressive animals between those ones that were sent for laboratorial test of rabies, especially towards their owners. From these information, the objective is to evaluate the risk factors for the occurrence of canine aggressions against people in the city of Araçatuba, SP, being related them with biological, ambient and behavioral factors of the animal. A questionnaire with 113 questions to the owners of aggressive dogs (case group) and not aggressive (control group), will be used for analyzes of general information about domiciles, specific on the aggressive and not aggressive animals, beyond the behavioural analysis of the animals in the two first ones and the two last months of creation, as well as of the general behavior. The profile of the victims and the aggressiveness of the dogs also will be studied. Data will be analyzed and compared between the two groups, in order to detect possible risk factors for the occurrence of aggressions and bites, by means of the calculation of Odds Ratio (OR) and of the respective confidence interval (IC) for each variable.
