Abstract

The Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology is based on optical links used for the distribution of radio-frequency (RF) signals of a wireless network. The system consists of a Base Station Controller (BSC) connected to various Remote Antenna (RAUs) through optical links. The motivation for this technology is the great decrease of the installation and maintenance cost of the RAUs, since all RF signal processing will be centralizedin the BSC. Among all the wireless broadband access network, the IEEE 802.16 standard, known as WiMax, has gained great prominence in industry and academia. Its characteristics, verysimilar to those of cellular networks, make the use of technologies such as RoF very interesting for the expansion of the network at a low cost. Several research and field tests showed the feasibility of transmission of WiMax signals WiMax (based on OFDM) in fiber and all the benefits that the employment of RoF in WiMax can bring. One of the major challenges, however, that remains is the adjustments in the synchronization timing of the physical and medium access control(MAC) layers of WiMax networks for their suitability to RoF and better performance of the high level protocols. The research proposal examine the performance of WiMax networks using Radio over Fiber technology from the point of view of the protocol stack proposed by the IEEE 802.16 standard. The work aims to expose the limitations for this type of system and propose ways of scaling it to the best performance. (AU)
