Abstract

The Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) can lead to structural impairment of the masticatory and cervical muscles, damaging the bite force and changing the muscular activity. The aim of this research will evaluate the electromyographic activity, the thickness and cross-section area of the masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles, during dental clenching with a standard bite load, between patients with TMD and control group. To analyze the presence of dysfunction will be used the questionnaire Diagnostic Criteria for Research of Temporomandibular Disorders (DCR). Will be assessed the full bite force during the maximal dental clenching and set standards of dental submaximal load by 30%, 50% and 70%, in order to standardize the data collection. Simultaneously, will be collected the electromyographic activity of masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles during the loads previously set and also analyses of the thickness and cross-section area of muscles through ultrasound equipment. The data will be analyzed by descriptive statistics and parametric and non parametric tests will be applied, according to data distribution, consisting of tests of comparison, correlation and regression models adjusted.
