Abstract

The complex urban transformation occurring in the last years raise a series of questions about the urban expansion in the territory, and stimulate the study of territorial dynamics and urban development. This research deals with the importance of studies about free spaces as a strategy to the planning and management of territories, considering the environment support and the urbanization process. The study considers that open spaces are integrants elements of territories and urban environments, and therefore of planning and management processes. Hence, states the importance of study and analysis of spaces not yet urbanized, as a strategy to management of territories and to the Brazilian regional planning. Considering the accelerated urban expansion and the current transformations in urban spaces of the cities in the state of São Paulo, the case study chosen for this research is the region of the cities of Ribeirão Preto-SP and São Carlos-SP, considering the socials, economics, spatial and historic particularities of each city. Therefore, the objective is to analyze the relation between the actual urbanization process of the region and the consequent impact in the landscape support, through the collect and systematization of dates using the Geographical Information System (GIS). This work analysis refers landscape planning as a base element to the regional understanding and management of territories between cities.
