Abstract

Assuming as the starting point a formal analysis of Paulo Lins' City of God, the project aims at discussing its artistic implications for the newest Brazilian prose of fiction just as well as for the already constituted (formed) tradition of the Brazilian novel. Beyond traditional literary borders, it will try coping with the "City of God phenomenon" that reaches forms of the Culture Industry such as television and cinema. In a second moment, and from the same formal matrix, the project will try to highlight and understand a possible cognitive function of the book, that is to say its capacity to apprehend a certain mutation in Brazilian social relations, or yet to establish a new point of view made possible by the novel.
