Abstract

Aegialomys is a member of the Oryzomyini tribe, which is distributed along the open areas of the western Peru and Ecuador, including Galapagos Archipelago. This genus, recently described, includes two species, A. galapagoensis and A. xanthaeolus, although, recent data suggests the presence of at least one undescribed species on Ecuador. This fact, together with questions that have been raised about the taxonomic status of Oryzomys xanthaeolus ica, and some restrictions about Oryzomys baroni, suggest that a revision of this group is needed, first of all, to identify and to define the species of the genus. Moreover, that will allow the recognition of the terminal taxa that should be represented in future phylogenetic analyses, since, until present, no study was published establishing the relationship among Aegialomys species. Thus, the present study intends to characterize the taxa in morphological and morfometric terms, and to describe their intra and interspecific variation, as well to establish the geographical distribution of each recognized species, attributing to them valid names, besides establishing taxa relationship, which will provide information that contributes to the conservation of populations. For that, scientific collections containing samples of this genus will be studied, especially in the United States, Ecuador and Peru. The data analyses will have a morphological approach, in qualitative and quantitative level, through uni and multivaried statistical analyses.
