Abstract

For it is a sensory deprivation of serious consequences for the child, family and society, hearing loss has been the object of concern and study in the search for alternatives that allow and provide expert assistance from health professionals to this population. This project aims to understand the experience of hearing loss in childhood from the family perspective, the role of the family in the life of the child, to identify the changes caused by disability in everyday life, to describe the coping strategies and the factors facilitating, and evaluating the structure, development and family functioning. This is a qualitative research, and the study it will be based on Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory approaches, theoretical and methodological respectively. The data will be obtained by the use of consensual semi-structured interviews, the genogram and ecomap, since they allow us to understand more fully the experiences and needs of respondents. We believe that this research will thus strengthen the knowledge on national and international literature on the complex situation of the presence of hearing loss in children and the need to address the family as a unit of care that reflect and undergo repercussions in living through this experience. In addition, we aim to guide and encourage professionals to develop strategies of care that consider the family system as a health care unit and therefore having an impact on this specific approach.
