Abstract

This research is about the adaptation of the novel The Butcher Boy (1992), by Patrick McCabe, to the play Frank Pig Says Hello (1992), also by Patrick McCabe, and to the movie The Butcher Boy (1997)adapted and directed by Neil Jordan. The aim of this study is to comprehend how the novel is made into a play and into a film and to find out why the author adapts his own work instead of creating a new plot. Has narratives been lacking lately? Or adaptations try to enhance a specific piece of work and its creator? Or I wonder if it is due the fact the author can never run out of that same topic? It will be extremely relevent to answer questions such as: when, whom, and what for adaptations are made, how is the audience acceptance, which events correspond and which ones deviate from the novel, that is, which techinical devices are used in the adaptation processes to represent the same work in two diferents ways, and finally, how is the same plot represented in three diferent forms: literature, theater, and cinema.
