Abstract

This research presents the archeology of the lower Rio Negro, particularly two archaeological sites located in Unini river, in the riverine communities of Floresta and Lago das Pombas. The river Unini flows between the Reserva Extrativista Rio Unini (Rio Unini Resex) and Parque Nacional do Jau (PNJ), where the studied sites are locateed. The archaeological sites provide the basis to discuss the process of pre-colonial occupation of the lower Rio Negro. The characterization of each site is based on the size and dispersion of archaeological remains and ceramic material analysis. Thus is presented a proposal on the chronology of occupation of these sites and how they relate to other regions already studied in the Amazon. The ceramic analysis and the inter-site comparisons enabled to rethink questions related to the appearance of the first pottery producing groups in Amazonia.
