Abstract

Reproductive timing in marine invertebrates may maximize breeding success. Several different sources of selective pressure may determine reproductive success in these organisms. The role of predation, both upon the offspring and parents, as a regulator of reproductive timing, is widely discussed. Likewise, timing of propagule release has been suggested to be shaped as to ensure that pelagic development of the young will take place in a benign environment. Past studies on barnacle reproduction have indicated a clear relationship between larval release and phytoplanktonic production, while others have shown a strict relationship with tidal regime and moon phase. In this project, we attempt to detect the environmental variables determining the timing of naupliar release in the barnacle Chthamalus bisinuatus. Sample populations will be submitted to manipulations in the laboratory, and the effect of photoperiod, temperature and immersion time will be tested both separately, and combined in pairs. These populations will be kept in aquaria, always submersed and divided in test groups under light and dark conditions. Variation cycles of temperature (12 h) and immersion time (12.4 h) will be applied. Cycles combining photoperiod and immersion (12 h and 12.4 h), and temperature and immersion (12 h and 12.4 h) are also proposed. We expect to identify which of these variables entrain release rhythms in C. bisinuatus, and test if there is an eventual hierarchy among these variables in such regulation. (AU)
