Abstract

The aging process results in abnormalities that can compromise the autonomy and quality of life of the elderly. Sensibility reduces with age and neurological olfactory changes are associated to neurodegenerative diseases. The oral sensibility depends on the signal transduction and saliva has an important role in that. The objective of this study is to investigate the thresholds of somesthetic, gustative, olfactory sensibilities and the salivary flow of individuals according to ages. The 120 subjects will be divided into 4 groups (18-25 years old; 26-40 years old; 41-60 years old; 61-80 years old). Half patients will be female in each group. They will be oriented about the purposes of this research and only those that had agreed in participating of the study and signed the consent form will be included. The methods of evaluation are: Clinical questionnaire of orofacial pain EDOF-HC, xerostomia questionnaire, superficial sensibility (pain, tactile, cold and warm) in distinct areas of the face, teeth (electric threshold) and distant areas (hands and legs), gustative and olfactory thresholds and salivary flow. Data will be tabled and statistical tests will be Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA, using the program SPSS 15 for Windows. The level of significance will be 5%.
