Abstract

Piracicaba river, the main right bank tributary of Tietê river, is also one of the most important São Paulo rivers and responsible for supplying the metropolitan region of Campinas and part of great São Paulo. For this reason, these waters have been suffering constant interventions in quantitative and qualitative terms over the last few decades, in function of intensive agricultural, urban and industrial activities. The assessment of these possible alterations on natural ecosystems, under intensive industrial and/or agricultural occupation, can be performed with the use of different methodologies, which are associated with the water physico-chemical control and suspended matter transport throughout the drainage basin. Thus, the monitoring of the Piracicaba river hydrogeochemistry characteristics, based on the evaluation of fluvial dynamics transports of the dissolved chemical species and particulates, will allow a better understanding of the mechanical and chemical erosive processes that mainly occur in the draining basin, considering contributions of the precipitation classes and human inputs, being possible to establish a regional modeling in the draining basin, identifying the main mechanisms that influence the mechanic erosion, as well as determining reference values of the chemical species concentrations for Piracicaba river, allowing the reconstruction of the main alteration processes that occur in the draining basin. Such aspects will provide a better agreement of the water body behavior, and additionally, they could be used as subsidies for the planning and the adequate handling of the draining area, face to the human pressures that the Piracicaba river basin is subject.
