Abstract

Emergence of infectious diseases is greatly related to human and domestic animals contact with wildlife. In Brazil and, regionally, in Minas Gerais state tick-borne diseases, leishmaniasis and rabies are among the most important zoonosis under surveillance. In the last decade, wild carnivores have been pointed out as suitable sentinels for the detection and monitoring of diseases in the environment. Health studies foccusing these animals can provide important insights into the sylvatic cycle of diseases of concern to public and animal health, as well as aid in the detection of risk factors for health and conservation of carnivores own and other wild species. This study will be conducted at Rio Doce State Park. This area is the largest Atlantic Forest reserve in Minas Gerais State (36,970 ha). This study intends to survey different health aspects of the wild carnivores at this state park, with special focus on direct and indirect studies to tick-borne pathogens, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis and rabies.
