Abstract

In mammals, the amount of caring a mother offer to her offspring is defined as maternal behavior (MB).MB is a complex, spontaneous, instinctive behavior with specific characteristics for each species, which are determined by physiological changes which happen a bit before or right after labor (Numan 1994; MATTSON et al, 2001). During this special period, the main objective of the female is to ensure hers and her offspring's survival. On the other hand, according to Hart (1988), the changes found in sick animals, were defined in group as sick behavior, which corresponds to an organized group of behavioral and physiological changes. Infections caused by LPS during pregnancy might cause mental diseases, intraverticular hemorrhage, placental necrosis, damage to the fetal organs, spontaneous abortions, among many other problems (Have et al, 2006), already the administration in the early period of life of rats causes changes in the exploratory response of offspring in adulthood when challenged with the same endotoxin. Several issues still remain to be investigated in this matter. The first would be relevant to the effects of disease on maternal behavior directly, and another was on the relevance and strength of the maternal drive in different periods of lactation and illness behavior; also questioned whether the behavioral and immunological changes caused in the offspring Therefore, in the attempt to answer these questions, as well as others that might appear during the development of this project, we intend to study the interactions maternal and sick behaviors in rats and behavioral changes and immulogical caused by LPS in the offspring. For this matter, we intend to use LPS, an endotixine derived from a bacteria tissue, as an inductor of the sick behavior in lactate rats in different stages of lactation. It will be analyzed the maternal behavior, and behavioral changes and immulogical caused by LPS in the offspring. We hope to clarify, at least in part, the questions above. (AU)
