Abstract

The sacred has always been a central theme on anthropology since its birth. This research proposes dealing with this notion through the lens of Georges Bataille and Michel Leiris. Having in mind the context of 1930's France, we intend to take in account the crossing of their intellectual experiences and their most original conceptual production. The 'sacred sociology' - proposed by both thinkers mainly in the years of the Collège de Sociologie - expands the sense of sacred by associating it to more daily and prosaic dimensions, as well as to the most obscure sides of human being: desire, memory and violence. The research proposes a reconsideration of both authors' specific intellectual experiences in interwar's times, having in sight their importance to anthropological theory. Realizing that their thoughts on such themes have not yet received an approach that recognizes the strength of their intellectual production, we intend to retrace the debates over the 'sacred', indicating how their ideas stand as an important "line of force" inside of an anthropological thinking that has Marcel Mauss as its main predecessor.
