Abstract The conception of more humane and sustainable housing demands a substantial theoretical engagement of an interdisciplinary humanizing knowledge base as a contribution to design process. Promoting human well-being while also reducing the impact to life support systems constitutes a relevant theme for designers of the built environment in the production of cities. It requires the responsible adjustment among interests such as of economic, environmental and use values from the scale of the urban structure to the specific scales of place and home. The research aims at the consideration of a humanizing base for the design process that supports the fulfillment of an ample spectrum of human needs in the context of multifamily housing for any household income, from the scales of site planning through dwelling unit itself. It will look for broadening the knowledge base and matching theoretical approaches of humanizing potential for the built environment so that it contributes to the generation of value in housing, a concept that involves subjective and multidimensional aspects. Theoretical references and groups of indicators which identify the processes related to humanization and the generation of multidimensional value in housing will be investigated so that they support the elaboration of guidelines for design analysis, reflection and practice. A representative and updated sample of awarded designs from the State of Sao Paulo will be evaluated according to elaborated parameters and paralleled by an exemplary design sample of those identified processes. The research intends to contribute to the consolidation of a humanizing knowledge base for the design process that synthesizes conceptual derivations and parameters in a way that it fosters inquiry in design theory and improvement on professional practice, especially assisting the realm of architectural and urban design education. | |
