Abstract We have shown in previous studies that the transmission of traffic with heavy-tail characteristics (e.g. Pareto) may be eased by segregation into separate wavelengths, according with the holding time. Burst segregation among n wavelengths (n x M/P/1) in the core of the optical burst network may yield better performance than in classical WDM systems (M/P/n) in terms of the residual lifetime, which dominates the total waiting time. This research project investigates the performance improvement obtained by optical switching networks over WDM through several policies for shaping at ingress and traffic segregation at the network core. The proposed techniques are oriented towards minimization of delay statistics and blocking probability in optical burst switching. We expect to take the improvements in the delay statistics, already obtained for the core nodes, to the electronic queueing in edge nodes, where the assembly and segmentation of optical bursts are made. The objective is to combine the preservation of traffic throughput in the network available wavelengths, implementation simplicity, fairness in the access to resources, and compliance with differentiated QoS requirements. | |
