Abstract

Semicontinuous process of emulsion copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate will be studied to obtain high solids content latexes. Bimodal particle size distribution, which favors the increase of solids content without an excessive increase in latex viscosity and destabilization of the emulsion, can be achieved through the renucleation of a secondary population of particles during the polymerization process. A population balance based mathematical model will be developed to predict the particle size distribution in this process and the model will be used to rationalize the experimental observations as well as to predict the behavior of the process.
