Abstract

DELTA (Description Language for Taxonomy) software is a sophisticated and powerful database that stores the morphological characters that can be exported in different ways. It allows a consistent descriptive taxonomy, producing conventional dichotomous keys and an interactive identification system, and phylogenetic matrices. With the program a taxonomist can build and store its research of many years. The accumulated data for such region can be sending to other researchers anywhere in the world. This database can be processed and imported into Intkey, which produces interactive identification systems for on or off-line users on the web. DELTA will be used for the subfamily Phlebotominae in Brazil that is represented by more than 240 species; some of them are vectors of Leishmania species. Firstly will be made a survey for collections that held phlebotomine sand fly species of Brazil; with afterwards visit to them for analyze in loci of deposited material. A list of geographical distribution of phlebotomine sand flies that occur in Brazil will be made, data by states, cities, municipalities, and biomes. An illustrated and interactive keys using DELTA will be created for the sub tribes, genera, subgenera and species and sub species. These data will be available on CD-ROM to governmental and private institutions, including public health departments in Brazil free of charges. (AU)
