Abstract

Introduction- Recent studies in Brazil and other foreign countries have shown a significant increase on medical leaves due to mental health disturbances. These have been acknowledged by the health world organization and the international labor organization as there are significant negative consequences on functional ability associated with reduced performance at work, reduced work ability, as well as consequences on workers' quality of life.A considerable amount of public resources are expected to be spent on health care and medical leaves due to mental problems. Particularly in Brazil, data have shown the medical leaves repeatedly occurred with the same worker, and he/she return to work facing the same working conditions that were associated with their illness, aggravating their health conditions, among teachers the present situation shows an intensification and deterioration of the working conditions. It is likely a significant percentage (30%) of the teachers face mental disturbances related to working conditions, as there is a growing number of teachers on medical leave.Aim: To evaluate characteristics of sick leaves due to mental and behavioral disorders and return to the work of elementary school teachers (I and II) of the public school system of São Paulo. It will be identified and evaluated the following elements: characterization of teachers, analysis of the meanings of sick leaves and return to work, their personal life stories, changes and actions that occurred in the workplace associated with factors that were related to return to work and, comparison of sick leaves and return to work among teachers who returned to work as teachers and those who were functionally readapted.Methods- it will be used a qualitative method, supported by some aspects of grounded theory. The project will be conducted in two phases: individual interviews, focused on "Process of sick leaves and return to work" using oral narratives, and focus group interviews. Data analysis will follow the guidelines according to GIBBS (2009). This author proposes analyses according to the grounded theory, with thematic coding according the following steps: open, axial and selective coding.
