Abstract

The survival of children with congenital anomalies has had improvement in their prognosis due tothe advances in technology and pharmaceuticals. Thus, the relationship between this children andtheir families and society becomes important, requiring interventions that collaborate with thisintegration. However, health professionals, including nurses, still have difficulties related to themonitoring and guidance of these families generally caused by unawareness of the real needs ofthese children. The objective of this work is knowing the experience of these families in caring forchildren with congenital anomaly in respect of their needs and expectations. SymbolicInteractionism (SI) and Narrative were chosen as theoretical and methodological referential, respectively. To obtain the data, we use the semi-structed interview, since it provides a greaterunderstanding of the subjectivity of the interviewee. We hope to get a better understanding of thecomplexity surrounding the experience of families of children with congenital anomaly and thatthe results of this study will stimulate the professionals to think of intervention strategies.
