Abstract

In this project, we propose to evaluate a method to recover the Brazil Current (BC) mesoscaledynamics from sea surface temperature (SST) imagery. To do that, we will use a model basedon the Surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) theory [Held et al., 1995]. Our hypothesis is that theBC has a potential vorticity structure essentialy trapped to the surface/subsurface (0-200 m), sothat it is possible to use a SQG approach in its domain. We propose to evaluate this method intrhee different locations (22, 25 e 28oS), whithin which the BC has different dynamical characteristics. The validation/verification will be done by comparing the modeled velocity againsttime series in-situ measurements. These method is a dynamical way to estimate surface andsubsurface velocity fields. So that, we can use it in BC dynamical studies and as a dynami-cally consistent method for assimilating SST in numerical models for ocean prediction, whichis important for the oil industry activities in this region.
