Metabolic syndrome is considered one of the main public health problems and comprehend a group of risk factors to cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus, including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, arterial hypertension, increased abdominal circumference and hypertrygliceridemia. Recent clinical studies revealed a strong correlation between metabolic syndrome and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), in which, overactive bladder plays a central role. A few works used obesity experimental models to study its effects upon the physiopathology of the lower urinary tract symptoms and urodynamic studies confirmed functional alterations derived from that condition. However, the mechanisms involved in obesity induced urodynamic changes remains to be elucidated, as well as the role of urethra in that dysfunction. In addition, the physiopathologic mechanisms involved in LUTS resultant form metabolic syndrome and the contribution of insulin resistance for that complication are still poorly studied. The present work aimed to investigate functional, biochemichal, molecular and morfological alterations in the lower urinary tract of C57BL/6 mice with metabolic syndrome induced by high fat diet.
