Abstract Due to the increasing anthropocentric view of nature, the social relations introduce a new temporal rhythm in the geographical environment, transforming and producing the natural environment, as the demand of accumulation of the system. By the limited notion of resources, a new term begins to permeate in international discussions, in the late twentieth century: 'sustainable development', which directs its proposals for different areas of social concern. For this, in the theoretical and practical, aimed at the discussion on urban sustainability, based on the relationship between society and nature through temporal and spatial analysis of Maringá city, Paraná State, Brazil. In the theoretical proposition, supported by an extensive bibliography, the discussion of urban sustainability leave the differentiation between the temporal rhythms of nature and society, according to their dynamics and processes. In the practical proposition, based on overlapping quantitative data and qualitative information, the analysis of urban sustainability will the presentation of alternative indicators and graphical modeling of the geographic space maringaense, as their theoretical proposal.
