Abstract

This project aims to investigate the relationship between melting, generation and preservation of granulite facies rocks. The idea that the granulites are residues of melting is old, but has gained much strength in recent decades mainly because of experimental work and thermodynamic modeling. The preservation of peak metamorphic parageneses depends on the removal of the melt generated, so that no retro-metamorphic reactions occur between the melt and the phases of the metamorphic peak, which in metapelites and quartz-feldspathic rocks, can be converted to biotite and feldspar. To investigate the processes involved in melting, generation of granulite and preservation of peak metamorphic parageneses, mineral chemistry will be analyzed by electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS, and based on the compositional variations, the heating and cooling histories will be established, as well as the relationship between melting and granulite metamorphism.
