Abstract

Monazite is an accessory mineral abundant in high-grade metamorphic rocks with sedimentary protolith, which is capable of recording distinct petrological events due to its high reactivity during the granulite facies metamorphism. Metamorphic reactions responsible for monazite formation during prograde and retrograde metamorphism can be identified from mineral textures and compositional zoning patterns in monazite. Variations in Y, REE (rare earth elements), Th, and U concentrations are used to correlate monazite growth or consumption with other major mineral phases. This work aims to recognize the stages of monazite formation from the chemical domains during the prograde and retrograde metamorphism of ultra-high temperature granulites from the Serra do Caparaó (Araçuaí Orogen).
