Abstract

Waste management of urban trees is related to one of the main challenges of urban centers: the proper disposal of solid waste, in compliance with National Policy on Solid Waste. Under the current circumstances, its mismanagement has resulted in high costs for municipalities, affecting large areas for disposal, land degradation and environmental pollution. Entails also the waste of materials that have potential for manufacture of various products such as small objects of wood for production of organic compost, or as a source of energy in the form of firewood and charcoal. Thus, it is proposed to build a model for waste management of urban forestry for small municipalities, which have particular technical, administrative and economic conditions that often render a proper disposal of such waste. The cities examined are those with fewer than 35,000 inhabitants in the State of São Paulo and participants of the Training Course for Public Managers: Waste Management of urban forestry in the municipalities of São Paulo provided by the Department of Forest Sciences, ESALQ / USP, seeking characterize waste and management models currently adopted, to identify solutions for management and ultimately develop a plan for managing waste from urban trees suitable for small towns.
