Effect of periodontal treatment on the lipid profile of obese patients with chronic periodontitis.

Abstract

Studies have been showed that the hyperlipidemia is associated to the periodontal disease and that the obesity can affect even more the dislipidemy levels, increasing the total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. There are evidences that the periodontal treatment may improve metabolic control of hyperlipidemia. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the effect of nonsurgical periodontal treatment on lipid profile in obese patients with chronic periodontitis. Patients will be divided into two groups: group 1 - Obese with chronic periodontitis (n = 25) and group 2 - normal weight with chronic periodontitis (n = 25). The following clinical periodontal parameters will be evaluated: plaque index (VPI), bleeding index (GBI), gingival recession (GR), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Blood samples will be collected to verify the lipid profile of patients, analyzing the levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The non-surgical periodontal treatment will be performed in both groups and the periodontal parameters and lipid levels will be assessed before and 3 months after the completion of periodontal treatment. The statistical analysis will be performed considering the normality of the data, with a significance level of 5%.
