Abstract Starting with the translation of the unpublished text in Portuguese of Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829), "Nachricht von den Werken des Johannes Poetischen Boccaccio" ("Essay on the poetic works of Giovanni Boccaccio"), dated from 1801, on Giovanni Boccaccio and his work "Decameron", the project attempts to elucidate the importance of the work of Boccaccio to Friedrich Schlegel. Aiming to investigate the importance of Boccaccio as the founder of the narrative form of "short story" in the West, we seek to understand the concept of "ideal form" as the revelation of "longing for the infinite" to Friedrich Schlegel, as well as part of his Aesthetic Theory dealing with the "completeness" and "unity of an organic whole" in the literary work. The Aesthetic Theory of Friedrich Schlegel, philosopher, literary critic, essayist and founder of the "First German Romanticism," will be the starting point of the project for the analysis and conceptualization of the romantic idea about the short story as a short narrative which, like the fragment, a gender exceptionally romantic, externalize the organic parts of the completeness and intensity of effect achieved by its brevity.
