Abstract

The consumption patterns of today's society bring up serious concerns to the material culture. Things (and human relationship) became more and more substitutable and contemporary way of life more and more unsustainable. Considering this reality, it is a designer duty, as a professional competence, to develop projects that contribute to environmental preservation. This research intent to study how the issues related to the minimization of environmental impacts can be introduced in the methodology of project in design. In order to this, intent to use the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as an important method to analyze environmental performance, focusing on case studies from beverage packing industry in Brazil (bottles and cans). It is supposed that this research may contribute to identify the environmental aspects to be considered in the conception and planning phases, and for their inclusion in the product design methodology. Through the study of selected authors from design area, who consider the methodology of project as a subject of analysis, also intent verify which of the proposed methodologies should be adapted or updated considering the environmental criteria related to life cycle. The main objective is to research variables that should represent environmental aspects of product life cycle, identifying which should be introduced in the methodology of project in design, as a reference for several categories of industrial products.
