Adaptive playful environment as a tool to provide cognitive training to senescent people

Abstract

The elderly population in Brazil, as in other countries, is clearly in growing process. IBGE data in 2014 showed that the number of elderly is expected to triple over the next 20 years. Research on cognitive and motor development of this population have been receiving major emphasis, as changes in these aspects are usually expected during the aging process. Studies suggest that digital games have shown positive developments with regard to cognition, social interaction and quality of life for seniors. However, digital games have been specifically designed for young people, more accustomed to digital interactions and more skills for rapid learning of the strategies used in such games. So suit the expectations of the elderly in order to obtain their acceptance of digital games, as a social inclusion tool remains a challenge in the area. Research that seek to address this challenge have the potential to improve the much quality of life of the elderly in Brazil. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop a digital gaming platform targeting the senescent public, especially for the Brazilian population. The portal development will follow the development process centered on User (UCD - User Centered Design). The chosen development methodology should strengthen the development of accessible and usable to the public senescent games. Thus, it is understood that the quality of games offered will be driven along with the user experience. Additionally, this project will develop adaptive games that drive the natural evolution of the skills of older second cognitive assessment techniques. Computerized adaptive tests will be applied to identify, incrementally, the best game strategies to support the quality of life of older people (in relation to motor, cognitive and social functions), considering similar groups and statistical tools for research validation.
