Abstract

Biodiesel is a liquid mixture of fatty acid esters obtained by reaction between fats or oils and alcohol in an alkaline medium, whose production has been stimulated in recent years due to economic reasons and environmental legislation. The cost of the raw materials and the competition with food for oils or soils are the main limitations to a more widespread use of biodiesel. The use of waste oil or cheap and non-edible oils and fats can help minimize this problem, but the formulation of a biodiesel must conform to a number of standards before approval for commercialization. The phase behavior of biodiesel depends on the oils or fats used in its production and the alcohol from which it is formed. At low temperatures, solid phases or a second liquid phase can be formed, and it may in some cases be an impediment to the use of biodiesel considering the specific rules of the National Petroleum Agency. This fact may be particularly critical in the biodiesel produced from ethyl alcohol, process little used or studied, although promising in the Brazilian case.This project aims to carry out a study of solid-liquid equilibrium of ethyl esters of fatty acids, pure or blended, in order to understand the phase behavior of biodiesel obtained from the transesterification reaction of fats and oils with ethyl alcohol and the development of different correlations to predict solid phases formation at different conditions. The project includes obtaining experimental data of solid-liquid equilibrium and correlation of such data by appropriate thermodynamic models.
