Abstract Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare genodermatosis with susceptibility to a specific group of human papillomavirus (EV-HPV) infection, and high risk of skin cancer. Malignant transformation of the skin lesions, mainly those located, in sun exposed areas, occurs in about 50% of patients. EV is considered a model of viral skin oncogenesis in humans. Its etiopathogeny is not completely understood, and involves genetic predisposition, HPV infection, impaired immunity, ultraviolet exposure among other factors. Almost 100% of genital HPV high-grade cervical lesions and invasive genital cancers have been shown to express very high levels of p16 protein. In order to contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) related to EV-HPV we intend to verify and compare p16 protein expression in SCC of EV patients, with those observed in patients without this disease and also a group of neoplastic lesions located in sun protect skin areas. | |
