Abstract

Stroke is the main cause of death in Brazil and the leading cause of disability worldwide. It is known that in developing countries like Brazil, cases of stroke affect a population with average age 15 years younger than in developed countries. Nevertheless, there are few data from prospective records of cerebrovascular disease in young people in the country, although most of these discontinuous and restricted to subgroups of diseases. This study aimed to obtain information about the epidemiology and the etiology of strokes in young adults treated at a Brazilian tertiary care hospital between 2006 and 2008, through a review of cases of stroke in patients under 50 years included in REAVER, prospective registry perennial all patients with acute cerebrovascular disease in patients treated at the Emergency of HCFMRP.
