Abstract

Good hand hygiene practices are set within the principles of universal precaution in Biosafety. However, the simple knowledge of this importance does not always inflict in adequate compliance behaviors within the professional practice. It has been shown that the individual experience is more important than formal education, when it is desidered to explain hand hygiene behavior. In order to evaluate the behavior in hygiene and hand hygiene a scale called the Hygiene Inventory-HI23, which contains 23 questions in English was proposed (Stevenson et al., 2009). Thus, the current study aims to make the cultural adaptation of the scale HI23, drafted in English, and to assess the reliability and internal consistency of the instrument adapted to Portuguese in Brazil. The study will be performed among dental students at Araraquara School of Dentistry - UNESP. For cultural adaptation of the questionnaire it will be used the methodology proposed by Guillemin et al. (1993) and Guillemin (1995). A sample of 40 students will be considered to estimate the intrarater reproducibility (k) applying Kappa statistic. Subsequently, a- Cronbach statistics will be applied to verify the reliability of HI23 scale adapted to Portuguese. The instrument in its final format will be applied to the dental students from 1st to 5th year of undergraduate course at Araraquara School of Dentistry - UNESP. Within a universe of about 300 registered, it is expected to achieve the participation of 200 volunteer students. A database will be created in Excel and will later be exported to Stata version 9.2. For the whole sample (n = 200), descriptive analysis regarding hygiene behavior will be done through tables and graphs, according to the points raised in the scale HI23. (AU)
