Abstract

Perineal injuries occur during vaginal delivery and are often associated with urinary and fecal incontinence symptoms, chronic perineal pain and dyspareunia in young women. Epidemiological studies have shown that some risk factors are most associated with anal sphincter and rectum injuries. However, little attention has been paid to perineal laceration of lesser extent and depth in other sites and how risk factors vary with the type of injury. In addition, studies fail to assess the maternal and fetal/neonatal morbidity related to obstetric perineal trauma.
