Abstract

With great increasing potential in market, baby leaf can stimulate vegetable consumption by Brazilian population, mainly children, helping to increase consumption numbers that are low in the country and reduce obesity. In the same way of market, production systems for baby leaf are beginning in Brazil needing to be studied. In the project FAPESP 2008/52305-1, recently finished, it were studied baby leaf production of four species (lettuce, watercress, table beat and rocket salad) in trays used to produce seedlings with different cell volumes. It was verified that is possible to produce baby leaf in this production system and it was also verified that substrate cost is representative in the total cost. Substrate reutilization can be a possibility to reduce production cost contributing for its optimization once that is not necessary to acquire new substrate. In parallel is necessary that the reused substrates are free of pathogens being solar treatment a tool to this finality. In that way the objectives of the present work are to verify the effect of one, two and tree reuses of coconut fiber substrate, with and without solar treatment in lettuce cv. Elisa baby leaf production in tray production system. (AU)
