Abstract

Among the tropical ornamental species the Family Costaceae has been getting attention, especially Costus productus Maas, which can be used as a cut flower, plant for garden or potted plant. Concerning the lack of studies in crop science, involving the management of mineral nutrition of ornamental plants the aim of this proposal is verify the growth and production of Costus productus in pots, in different levels of nitrogen, in order to offer high quality plants to consumers. The experiment will be developed in 14 liter pots in a protected environment, in the Unidade de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento de Ubatuba (APTA/UPDU) in Ubatuba, SP. The experiment design will be in randomized block, with five treatments and five replications. Treatments consist of in different nitrogen amount per plant or pot (0, 1.2, 2.4, 3.6 and 4.8 g), defined from a previous study of N content in the plant. Plants will be obtained by cutting and will have a cycle of one year. In each month will be evaluated the following characteristics: plant height, pot filling, period of the vegetative growth, flowering time and inflorescence number per plant, information that will support the establishment of these species as a pot plant. At the time of transplantation and at four, eight and twelve months of production cycle will be measure the fresh and dry weight (g) of the shoots. At the beginning of flowering and late season will be determined the nitrate content in the cell juice of the plant leaves, relative chlorophyll index and nutrient content in the leaves (laboratory). The data obtained in the experiment will be statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and using the F test.If there is significance for any dose, a regression analysis will be done setting the best fit according significance combination and higher coefficient of determination.
