Abstract Using the PNAD data, the research will investigate the characteristics and evolution of income distribution in Brazilian agriculture in two dimensions: the income of farm households and the income of people occupied in agriculture. Due to methodological limitations, the focus of analysis is the sector of economic activity (agriculture) and not the spatial / territorial definition of "rural". The literature on income distribution under capitalism is vast, but it focuses mainly the urban areas and sectors related to the ongoing process of urbanization. Thus, it is important to investigate, in a more detailed way, the characteristics and changes that occurred in Brazilian agriculture in relation to the distribution of value added in the sector. Despite the recurring process of urbanization, the country still lives with a population occupied in agricultural activities of significant size, larger than the population of some South American countries. The present study will investigate the changes in the composition of household income per capita, paying attention to the process of farm income diversification and will also address the income of people occupied in agriculture, arguing that labor is still the main source of income for farm households.
