Synchronization processes are observed in several physical systems, biological, chemical, technological and social. Such systems can be described and modelled through complex network, in way that the full comprehension of the emergence of collective behavior in theses systems can only be achieved by theories that encompass the interaction of its elements, which are coupled by heterogeneous and non-trivial structures. In this work we will study the emergence of first-order phase transitions in the synchronization of coupled oscillators in the presence of time delays in complex networks, observed due to the microscopic correlation between the network topology and dynamics. More specifically, we will investigate the dependence of the critical coupling needed to observe explosive synchronization in the presence of time delays using mean field theories. Moreover, we will investigate the behavior of such first-order phase transitions in complex networks with non-null assortativity in order to identify the necessary conditions to observe explosive synchronization. This work will complement the studies developed until now, where we obtained through mean field approximations the analytical expression for critical coupling for the explosive synchronization in scale-free networks.
