Abstract

Antibiotic therapy is the most widely used procedure in the treatment of bovine mastitis, but the growing concern about the presence of antimicrobial residues in milk and the emergence of resistant bacterial strains has stimulated the search for treatments that reduce or eliminate such problems. The choice of appropriate antimicrobial for treatment of mastitis is essential, both from the standpoint of animal health, the productivity of the mammary gland. The bacterial agent most frequently isolated in this condition is Staphylococcus aureus, which have been shown in several studies on the pattern of increasing antimicrobial resistance. The achacin is a glycoprotein found in mucus of Achatina sp and has bactericidal action against Gram positive and Gram negative, so the objectives of this project are: to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of achacin on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 as well as assess determined the minimum inhibitory concentration of achacin on Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine intramammary infections.
