Abstract

The evaluation of school quality in basic education system has been widely studied and discussed in the late seventies, reaching its peak in the nineties. However, there is still little explored facet of these studies: the participation of parents in school evaluation. This research seeks to examine the conditions and characteristics of parental participation in school assessment and how their engagement may contribute to the construction of a negotiated pact on quality. It is inserted mainly on qualitative research in education and employs study case method based on ethnographic investigation. This covers the elementary schools in the municipality of Campinas city, Sao Paulo state, been the parents as members of the Comissões Próprias de Avaliação (Evaluation Board's Commission), the research subjects. Through the study of the implementation of the institutional evaluation experiment in Campinas public schools two objectives should be attended: at first, contributing to explain that complex reality and at last, by defending a larger parental participation in the formal regulation process of quality in school's evaluation.
