Abstract

This research intends to reflect to what extent the diffusion of the ideal of the good death by the religious sermon, in the XVth century, depends on the encouragement of the individual memory exercise. We will reflect about the role of didactic books that teach the theme of death and that had a large flow in that period - especially in France, where it had a considerable course. We want to emphasize the text Ars moriendi, in order to comprehend how those books intended to control the laical behavior towards death and memory, from a pedagogical purpose, and, the same time, tried to ask the spiritual needs of medieval french men. We intend to investigate the relationship between the memory exercise encouraged by this books and the development of an individualized and introspective reflection of death, as well as to understand how that relationship affects the individual assimilation of Christian lessons and principles. Moreover, we will examine the place that this pedagogy gives to the particular memories contents and how the mankind perceives yourself in time when reflects about death. (AU)
