Abstract

This project aims to study groups involved in discourses and practices of "urban requalification" in downtown São Paulo. To achieve this end, I propose the observation of the activities developed by some Ações Locais (subgroups belonging to the Associação Viva o Centro) and, from there, to follow other directions that may be provided by its members in order to establish a network of contacts and agents involved in these policies. The purpose of this research is to understand what values are conveyed, how heterogeneous or not these groups are, and to what extent, through their actions, they point out certain use of space they hope to find in the region. Another point to be investigated is the impact that this vision may have under recurring practices in the center (as the presence of street vendors and homeless people), practices that were identified, both by bibliographically and initial field work, as unwanted by those associations.
