Electrophysiological auditory evaluation in infants with Hydrocephalus

Abstract

Introduction: Electrophysiological methods are useful in assessing newborns. The auditory evoked potential is widely used for assessing the maturation of auditory pathways and detect retrocochlear injuries. The auditory steady state response (ASSR) corresponds to electrophysiological responses to continuous-tone frequency modulation that allows a detailed assessment hearing that is analyzed objectively, reducing the risk of subjective analysis by the assessor. Objective: To investigate the correlation between the results of ABR and ASSR in children diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Method: 25 children to zero and twelve months will be evaluated, divided into two groups: study and control. All the children will be subject to completion of the ABR (search for the integrity of auditory pathways 80dbNA and electrophysiological threshold), as well as research of the ASSR. Is the equipment used Smart EP, Intelligent Hearing Systems in acoustically treated and electrically protected. The skin is prepared using abrasive paste, and use surface electrodes positioned following the 10-20 international system (lobes and forehead) with impedance below 5 k©. The parameters used follow the standardization of Hood (1998), which are at least 1000 clicks presented with insertion phones in two sets, display speed of 27.7 clicks per second, rarefied polarity window of 12 ms. At the end of the study, the results will be submitted to appropriate statistical analysis. (AU)
