Violent deaths of young people from São Paulo city: the role of alcohol and other associated factors

Abstract

In Brazil there is a large number of teenagers violently victimized due to the negative effects of alcohol consumption. Sometimes, alcohol facilitates social relationships, however, it is also associated with homicides and accidents causing social, economic and health damages. These are reasons to justify the need for studies that will further contribute to the enrichment of the scarce national literature on the issue. To assess the prevalence of deaths from violent nature involving the consumption of alcohol in the adolescent population in the city of Sao Paulo. To identify factors associated with the death of violent nature involving alcohol consumption. This is an analytical observational case-control that will take place at the IML/SP through direct reading of drug testing and necropsy reports. Subjects between 10 years and 19 years of age, victims of death of violent nature in São Paulo during 2008 (submitted to the test dose alcohol in the blood as part of a legal protocol) will be selected. The sample will be divided into two groups, case group and control group. Comparison will occur between the two groups, both with the same outcome (violent death) and similar characteristics, just differing in the blood alcohol concentration (positive in the case group and negative control group).
