Abstract

The sensory deprivation can be caused by conductive or sensorineural hearing loss. Hearing impairment resulting from the aging process are called presbycusis. A communication disorder can be very damaging, affecting performance in different activities and possibly aspects of cognitive and social. Attention is a crucial function that allows the effective intervention of the subject with his environment, and supporting the organization of mental processes. The purpose of this study is to verify the influence that sustained auditory attention suffers in the process of aging, as well as sensory deprivation as a result of a hearing loss. Objective: To evaluate the performance of older adults with and without a diagnosis of mild hearing loss in the Sustained Auditory Attention Ability Test (SAAAT). Material and methods: The research will be developed in the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, Bauru School of Dentistry - University of São Paulo. The sample will consist of 40 elderly subjects (above 60 years old), and 20 adult subjects of both genders. The participants will be divided into three groups: GI: will consist of 20 elderly people with normal hearing bilaterally, G II: 20 elderly diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss of mild degree and G III will consist of 20 adults, with normal hearing bilaterally, to compare the results found in older subjects. All subjects will undergo pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, immittance and SAAAT. It should be achieved the performance of the three groups studied, as well as comparison.
